What Is Adaptive Surfing?

Adaptive surfing is a modified form of surfing that makes it possible for people with physical or cognitive disabilities to experience the ocean and enjoy the feeling of catching waves.

Each session is adapted to the participant’s abilities, needs and confidence in the water.

Depending on each person, adaptive surfing may include specialized equipment, extra support from instructors, adapted teaching methods and a slower, more patient approach before entering the water.

Our goal is to create a safe, comfortable and rewarding experience where every participant can enjoy the ocean in their own way.

Who Are Adaptive Surf Lessons For?

Our adaptive surf lessons are designed for people with different abilities, needs and levels of confidence in the water.

These sessions may be suitable for:

  • People with physical disabilities;
  • People with cognitive disabilities;
  • Children, teenagers or adults who need adapted support;
  • Participants who need extra time, patience and guidance;
  • Families looking for an inclusive ocean experience;
  • Schools, municipalities, associations or organizations looking for adapted surf activities.

Each situation is different. When booking, we recommend sharing relevant information about the participant’s needs so our team can prepare the safest and most comfortable experience possible.

Our Approach to Adaptive Surfing

At Imagine Surf School, we do not believe in one-size-fits-all surf lessons.

Every adaptive surf session is planned with care and adapted to the person in front of us: their abilities, comfort level, relationship with the ocean and specific needs.

Our instructors work closely with each participant, creating a calm and supportive environment before, during and after the session.

The focus is not pressure or performance.

The focus is confidence, safety, connection with the ocean and the joy of experiencing something new.

Safety and Support in the Water

Safety is our first priority in every adaptive surf lesson.

Before entering the water, our instructors assess the sea conditions, the participant’s needs and the best way to organize the session.

Inside the water, participants are always closely supported by the instructor.

The lesson is adapted step by step, with time to rest, communicate and adjust whenever needed.

How Adaptive Surf Lessons Work

Our adaptive surf lessons last around 2 hours and are always scheduled according to the best tide and the safest ocean conditions.

A typical session may include:

  • Welcoming the participant and understanding their needs;
  • Getting ready with wetsuit and adapted surf equipment;
  • A calm briefing on the sand;
  • A warm-up and practical explanation before entering the water;
  • Time in the ocean with close support from the instructor;
  • Breaks whenever needed.

Every session is adapted to the participant’s rhythm. The goal is to make the experience safe, positive and enjoyable from start to finish.

Most lessons take place at Praia do Pego, where Imagine Surf School is based.
