Why Surf in Winter in Comporta?

Winter brings a different kind of energy to the Alentejo coast.

Praia do Pego and the surrounding beaches feel more open, more raw and more connected to nature. For many students, this is exactly what makes the experience so special.

Surfing in winter is ideal if you want to:

  • Improve your technique with more focus;
  • Train consistently outside the busy summer season;
  • Understand how tides, wind and swell affect the waves;
  • Learn how to read the ocean before entering the water;
  • Build confidence in different sea conditions;
  • Develop more autonomy as a surfer;
  • Experience surfing as a lifestyle, not just as a summer activity.

At Imagine Surf School, we use the low season to keep the surf energy alive – with lessons focused on progression, ocean awareness and the true spirit of surfing.

Who Are These Lessons For?

Our winter surf lessons are suitable for different levels, ages and goals.

Beginners

For students who are starting their surf journey and want to learn in a calm, safe and consistent way.

You will learn the basics of ocean safety, board handling, take-off technique, balance and how to catch your first waves with more confidence.

Intermediate & Advanced Surfers

For surfers who already have some experience and want to improve their technique, positioning and wave reading.

We focus on correcting mistakes, improving timing, choosing better waves and helping you understand what to do in the water with more confidence.

If you want more than a fun surf lesson and would like to build real surfing skills over time, winter is a great season to do it.

These lessons are ideal for students who want consistency, feedback and a stronger understanding of the ocean.

What You Will Learn

Our winter surf lessons are organized around different learning modules. These modules may vary depending on the forecast, ocean conditions, student level and availability.

Depending on the session, we may work on:

  • Surf technique, including paddling, take-off, stance, balance, positioning and wave selection;
  • Ocean and wave dynamics, including how waves are formed, how sandbanks work and how tides influence the surf;
  • Forecast reading, including swell direction, swell period, wind, tides and weather conditions;
  • Surf equipment, including surfboards, wetsuits, leashes, fins and board shapes;
  • Surf rules, safety and etiquette, including priority, positioning, localism and respect in the lineup;
  • Surf culture, through films, documentaries, conversations and shared experiences;
  • Environmental awareness, encouraging respect for the beach, the ocean and the natural environment;
  • Surf skate, to improve balance, body rotation, stance and surf technique outside the water;
  • Surf trips, when conditions and availability allow;
  • WSL Fantasy and surf competition culture, helping students follow professional surfing in a fun and interactive way;
  • Beginner surf instruction and community initiatives, for students who want to understand how surf can also be shared with others.

Optional activities such as yoga or meditation may also be available depending on the program and availability, with an additional cost.

The goal is to help you become a more complete, confident and conscious surfer.

How Winter Surf Lessons Work

Our winter surf lessons are flexible and adapted to the ocean.

Each module is independent, which means that if you miss one session, you may be able to join another session later, depending on availability.

Whenever possible, we organize surf lessons and/or surf skate sessions during the weekends. However, schedules always depend on the forecast, tides, ocean conditions and student availability.

A typical winter session may include:

  • Preparation and equipment setup;
  • Warm-up and practical explanation on the beach;
  • Technical exercises on the sand;
  • Time in the water catching waves and improving skills;
  • Ocean reading and feedback from the instructor;
  • Complementary surf skate, theory or surf culture work when conditions require it.

The goal is always the same: to help you become a more complete, confident and conscious surfer.
