Lisbon is one of the best places in Europe to surf, offering easy access to a wide variety of waves for different skill levels. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the best surf spots near Lisbon, explain who each beach is best suited for, what to expect in the water, and how to choose the right spot based on your level and the kind of surf experience you’re looking for.

I’ll also include Praia do Pego, in Comporta. It is slightly further from Lisbon than the classic city surf spots, but it deserves a place in this guide because it offers a different kind of surf experience: quieter, more spacious, and especially well suited to beginners, families, and travellers looking for a calmer surf day by the ocean.

How to Choose the Right Surf Spot Near Lisbon

The best surf spot near Lisbon is not always the most famous one. It’s the one that matches your level, the day’s conditions, and the kind of session you want.

If you’re a beginner, look for sandy beaches with gentle waves, enough space, and easy access to support and instruction. If you already have some experience, you may prefer spots with more consistent waves where you can practise turns, timing, and positioning. Some beaches are ideal for a quick lesson close to the city, while others are better for a full surf day with more space, less pressure, and a different atmosphere.

That’s why it makes more sense to choose by fit, not just by “name”.

Where to Surf Near Lisbon

Some of the main surf areas near Lisbon are:

  • Carcavelos for easy access from the city;
  • Costa da Caparica for variety and more space;
  • Guincho for more exposed and powerful waves;
  • Praia Grande for consistent beach-break surf;
  • Ericeira, probably the most complete surf zone in the region;
  • Praia do Pego, in Comporta, for a quieter beginner-friendly surf experience with more space and a more relaxed coastal setting.

Each one offers a different kind of session, which is why the right choice depends more on your level than on the beach’s reputation.

Best Surf Spots Near Lisbon

Carcavelos

Carcavelos is usually the first beach that comes up when people talk about surfing near Lisbon, and for good reason. If you want a straightforward option that is easy to reach and well connected to the city, it’s one of the easiest choices you can make.

That convenience is a big part of its appeal. You don’t need to turn the day into a full surf mission. You can stay in Lisbon, head to the beach without too much planning, and still get a proper surf session in.

Carcavelos is popular with locals, visitors, and surf schools alike, so it has a lively atmosphere and a strong surf culture. The downside is that you’ll rarely have it to “yourself”.

Best For

Beginners, intermediate surfers, and anyone looking for the most practical surf option close to Lisbon.

What to expect

  • Easy access from the city
  • A well-known and active surf beach
  • A good all-round option for different levels
  • More people in the water, especially on good days

If you’re staying in Lisbon and want the simplest surf plan possible, Carcavelos makes a lot of sense. It’s convenient, reliable, and easy to understand. It may not be the calmest or quietest option, but it’s one of the most accessible and one of the easiest places to fit into a city trip. More info about
surfing at Carcavelos Beach here.

Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica is one of the most versatile surf areas near Lisbon, and that’s what makes it so useful. Rather than being defined by one beach, it stretches across a long coastline with multiple peaks, different moods, and more room to adapt to the conditions.

That flexibility is its biggest strength.

If one section feels too crowded, too messy, or too advanced for your level, there’s often another part of the coast that works better. That makes Caparica a strong choice for beginners, mixed-level groups, and surfers who want more freedom to find a comfortable setup. It also tends to feel a little less compressed than the more urban surf options, which can make the whole experience more relaxed.

Best for

Beginners, intermediate surfers, groups, and anyone who wants more choice in one area.

What to expect

  • A long sandy coastline with multiple surf peaks
  • More flexibility than single-beach spots
  • Plenty of room to find a suitable area
  • A less urban feel than Carcavelos

If someone asked me for one safe, flexible recommendation near Lisbon without giving me much detail, Costa da Caparica would be one of the first places I’d mention. It gives you options, and in surfing, options usually mean a better chance of finding the right session. More info about surfing at Costa da Caparica Beach here

Guincho

Guincho is one of the most beautiful and iconic beaches near Lisbon, but it’s also one of the most exposed. It has a raw Atlantic feel that many surfers love, but it’s not the kind of place I’d recommend casually to every beginner.

This is a beach that feels powerful. The scenery is dramatic, the ocean has more energy, and the conditions can change quickly depending on the wind. On the right day, it can be incredible. On the wrong day, it can feel intimidating if you’re not used to stronger surf.

That’s why Guincho is better approached with a bit of humility and good judgement.

Best for

Experienced surfers and confident intermediates who already feel comfortable in open Atlantic conditions.

What to expect

  • More exposed and energetic surf
  • Wind as an important factor
  • A wilder, less forgiving feel
  • One of the most scenic surf settings near Lisbon

Guincho is special, but it asks more from you. I’d choose it for its atmosphere, beauty, and power, not for ease. If you already have ocean confidence, it can be a memorable place to surf. If you’re still learning, there are easier places to build that confidence first. More info about surfing at Guinho beach here.

Praia Grande

Praia Grande, near Sintra, is a solid option if you’re looking for a more open and consistent beach break. It tends to attract surfers who want something a little more exposed and a little less beginner-oriented than the easiest beaches closer to the city.

As it’s an open beach break, it can provide excellent surfing conditions when the elements align. At the same time, it’s a spot where you need to read the day properly. Wind quality matters, and the experience can feel very different depending on the size and shape of the swell. For improving surfers, that can be part of the appeal.

Best for

Intermediate surfers, confident improvers, and more experienced surfers looking for a consistent beach break.

What to expect

  • Consistent waves
  • A broad open beach
  • A more exposed feel than easier beginner spots
  • Better sessions when the wind is clean

Praia Grande can be a really good option if you already have some confidence in the water and want to keep progressing. It’s not always the most forgiving place to start from zero, but for intermediates especially, it can be a strong and rewarding choice. More info about surfing at Praia Grande here

Ericeira

Ericeira is one of the most well-known surf areas near Lisbon, and a great option if you want to explore a destination with a strong surf identity.

Rather than being just one beach, Ericeira offers several different surf spots, each with its own style and level of difficulty. This variety makes it appealing for surfers who want more than a quick session and are happy to spend a full day, or even a weekend, discovering different waves.

That said, Ericeira is not always the easiest choice for beginners. Some spots can be more technical, powerful, or crowded, so it’s important to choose the right beach according to your level and the day’s conditions.

Best for

Intermediate and advanced surfers, and beginners only when conditions and beach choice are suitable.

What to expect

  • Several surf spots in one region
  • A strong surf culture and atmosphere
  • Good variety for different levels
  • Some waves that can be more technical or crowded

Ericeira can be a very rewarding surf destination if you want variety, atmosphere, and a deeper surf culture. Just remember that the best experience depends on choosing the right spot for your level, rather than assuming every wave in the area will be suitable. More info about surfing at Ericeira here

Praia do Pego, Comporta

Praia do Pego, in Comporta, is a different kind of surf option near Lisbon. It is not the closest beach to the city, so I would not describe it as the obvious choice for a quick surf session between two plans in Lisbon. But if you want to turn surfing into a more relaxed day by the ocean, it becomes one of the most interesting options.

The main appeal of Praia do Pego is the overall experience. The beach is wide, the atmosphere is calmer, and the surrounding landscape feels much less urban than many of the better-known surf beaches closer to Lisbon. For beginners, families, and people who want to learn without feeling rushed or crowded, that makes a real difference.

It is also the home of Imagine Surf School. Our lessons are based here because Praia do Pego offers the kind of setting we value most: space, safety, nature, and a slower rhythm that helps people feel comfortable in the water. For first-time surfers especially, that confidence matters as much as the wave itself.

Best for

Beginners, families, kids, private lessons, and anyone looking for a quieter, more personal surf experience close enough to Lisbon for a full-day trip.

What to expect

  • A wider, calmer beach setting than the more urban surf spots;
  • A strong option for beginner surf lessons and family surf experiences;
  • More space and a more relaxed atmosphere;
  • A surf experience connected to the slow-living lifestyle of Comporta;
  •  A better fit for a planned surf day than for a quick city surf session.

Praia do Pego makes sense if your priority is not just ticking off a famous surf spot, but having a safe, beautiful and more personal introduction to surfing in Portugal. It is a little further from Lisbon, but that extra distance is exactly what gives the experience its calmer feeling. More info about surfing at Praia do Pego here.

Best Spot Near Lisbon for Each Level

One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing a beach based on its “name” rather than their actual level. A famous spot can still be completely wrong for you on a given day, and a less talked-about beach can end up being the perfect place to surf.

Level

Best options

Beginner

Praia do Pego (Comporta), Costa da Caparica, Carcavelos

Intermediate

Costa da Caparica, Praia Grande, Carcavelos, Ericeira, Praia do Pego

Advanced

Guincho, Praia Grande, Ericeira

* This table is a simplified guide. The best surf spot for each level may vary depending on the tide, swell size, swell direction, wind, sandbanks, crowd levels, and overall safety conditions.

For beginners, the priority should be space, softer waves, safety, and a beach that allows you to build confidence. That is why Praia do Pego deserves to be included as one of the strongest beginner-friendly options near Lisbon. For intermediates, the goal is usually to find waves that let you improve your positioning, timing, and reading of the ocean. For advanced surfers, the focus shifts more toward power, performance, and quality.

Best Time of Year to Surf Near Lisbon

The good thing about surfing near Lisbon is that there are waves throughout the year. The difference is not whether you can surf, but what kind of conditions you’re likely to find and which season suits your level best.

If you’re a beginner, smaller and friendlier waves usually make the learning experience much better. If you already surf with confidence, the bigger and more powerful seasons open up a lot more possibilities.

Here’s the simple seasonal overview:

Season

Conditions

Best for

Crowds

Winter

Bigger, more powerful surf

Intermediate to advanced

Low

Spring

Balanced, cleaner conditions

All levels

Low to medium

Summer

Smaller, friendlier waves

Beginners

Medium to high

Autumn

Excellent overall quality

All levels

Medium

For most beginners, June to September is the easiest and most comfortable time to surf near Lisbon. The waves are often smaller, the weather is warmer, and the overall experience tends to feel more approachable.

If you’re looking at overall surf quality rather than just ease, September to November is usually one of the best windows. The water is still relatively pleasant, the summer crowds start to ease off, and the surf often becomes more consistent and interesting. For those visiting outside peak summer, our winter surf lessons can be a great way to keep surfing with more space, focus and consistency.

Which Lisbon Surf Area Fits the Experience You Want?

By this point, the main surf spots near Lisbon are clear. So instead of asking which beach is “best”, it often makes more sense to ask what kind of surf day you actually want.

  • If you want something quick and easy from the city: Carcavelos is usually the simplest option.
  •  If you want more space and more flexibility, Costa da Caparica is often the better fit.
  • If you want a calmer full-day surf experience in a more natural setting, Praia do Pego in Comporta is a strong choice, especially for beginners and families,
  • If you’re looking for a more exposed and powerful wave, Guincho stands out straight away.
  • If you want a consistent beach break with a bit more energy, Praia Grande is a strong option.
  • And if what you want is the most complete surf destination near Lisbon, with more variety and a stronger surf atmosphere, Ericeira is usually the best choice.

That is often the easiest way to narrow it down. Not by choosing the most famous name, but by choosing the kind of experience that suits you best.

My personal and final view

Lisbon is an excellent choice if you’re looking for variety, easy access, and several surf spots within a short distance. It gives you a lot of options, which is one of its biggest strengths. But that kind of variety is not what everyone is looking for.

Some people want a calmer setting, smaller groups, and a more personal way of learning. They want to feel safe in the water, properly guided, and connected to the ocean rather than rushed through the session. That is very much the philosophy behind Imagine Surf School.

So my honest view is: if you want a surf trip based around Lisbon, the spots in this guide give you plenty of good options. But if what you’re really looking for is a more relaxed, personal and high-quality surf experience in Portugal, Praia do Pego in Comporta may suit you even better.

Surf Experience at Praia do Pego, Comporta

Imagine Surf School is based at Praia do Pego, in Comporta, where the atmosphere is quieter, the setting is more relaxed, and the focus is on quality over volume. We keep groups small, work with certified instructors, and adapt each lesson to the person in front of us. That more human, safety-first approach is a big part of who we are and how we teach.
