Surfing on the Costa Vicentina: best beaches, conditions and local tips

The Costa Vicentina is one of those places that always makes me want to keep driving.

Around every bend, there seems to be another cliff, another path through the dunes or another beach receiving Atlantic swell. Some spots are wide and exposed, while others sit inside more protected bays.

This variety is what makes surfing here so rewarding. It is also why I never recommend choosing a beach based only on a photograph or a number on a surf forecast.

After years of surfing and teaching along the Alentejo coast, my main advice is to take time to watch the ocean, choose conditions that match your ability and, when in doubt, ask someone who knows the area. Conditions can change quickly along this coast, so be prepared to change beach, adjust your plans or skip a session when the sea does not feel right.

Where is the Costa Vicentina?

The name Costa Vicentina is sometimes used in different ways. Official tourism sources generally use it for the coastline between Odeceixe and Burgau, while the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park extends further north, from São Torpes to Burgau.

For this guide, I follow a wider surf route through the Natural Park, from São Torpes, near Sines, to the beaches around Vila do Bispo.

Important:

No beach has a fixed difficulty level. Swell, wind, tide and sandbanks can change the conditions within a few hours

Travelling with people who do not surf? Odeceixe, Arrifana and Amado are among the easiest options to combine with time on the beach, a meal or a visit to a nearby village.

1. Praia de São Torpes

São Torpes is one of the most accessible surfing areas on the northern Alentejo coast.

The beach is long, with different sections and several types of wave depending on the swell and sandbanks. On suitable days, local surf schools use selected areas for lessons, while other peaks may appeal to more experienced surfers.

It is a practical first stop for anyone travelling south from Lisbon, Comporta or Sines.

Best for: an accessible introduction to surfing on the Alentejo coast.

Watch out for: rocks and the assumption that conditions are the same along the entire beach.

2. Praia do Malhão

Malhão feels wilder and more exposed.

Its size creates space, but it can also make the ocean more difficult to read. Different access points lead to different sections of beach, and the conditions may vary considerably between them.

On smaller, clean days, intermediate surfers may find good peaks. When the swell increases or currents become stronger, the beach is better left to confident and experienced surfers.

Best for: surfers comfortable reading open beach breaks.

Watch out for: currents, shorebreak and isolated areas without nearby assistance.

3. Praia de Odeceixe

Odeceixe is one of the most distinctive beaches on the route. The river reaches the ocean beside the village, creating a landscape with both a coastal and river environment.

The ocean side can offer approachable waves when conditions are small and organised. However, river-mouth beaches require particular attention because channels, sandbanks and moving water can change quickly.

Best for: beginners with instruction and intermediates on suitable days.

Watch out for: currents near the river mouth and designated swimming areas in summer.

4. Praia da Arrifana

Arrifana sits inside a dramatic bay surrounded by high cliffs.

Its position provides more protection than many open beaches on the west coast, making it a popular option when exposed spots are receiving too much swell. The sandy part of the bay may suit beginners and improving surfers on smaller days.

More advanced reef sections should not be treated as the natural next step for someone who is still learning.

The main disadvantage is popularity. Good conditions can attract a large number of surfers.

Best for: learners with instruction and improving surfers.
Watch out for: crowded peaks, parking and more advanced reef areas.

5. Praia do Amado

Amado is one of the Costa Vicentina’s best-known surf beaches.

Its long surf culture, access and variety of peaks make it a useful stop for visitors exploring the region. Surf schools regularly operate here, and different parts of the beach may suit different levels.

However, a beach that is popular with beginners is not automatically easy. Larger Atlantic swells can make Amado demanding, and summer brings more people into the water.

Best for: different levels when the appropriate peak is selected.

Watch out for: busy line-ups, surf-school areas and changes in conditions along the beach.

6. Bordeira, Cordoama and Castelejo

These beaches represent the wilder, more exposed side of the Costa Vicentina.

Bordeira is exceptionally wide, particularly at low tide. Its scale is impressive, but currents, long paddles and changing peaks can make it deceptive.

Further south, Cordoama and Castelejo sit beneath dramatic cliffs near Vila do Bispo. They regularly receive powerful Atlantic swell and can provide excellent surf for experienced visitors.

These are not the beaches I would recommend to someone who is still learning to identify currents or control a board independently.

Best for: experienced surfers looking for exposed Atlantic conditions.

Watch out for: powerful swell, currents, rocks and the changing tide near cliffs.

There is no single best season for everyone.

Beginners generally need smaller, organised waves and lighter winds. More experienced surfers may prefer the consistency of autumn or the power of winter.

How to read the conditions

A surf forecast is useful, but it does not tell the whole story.

Before choosing a beach, check:

Swell size and period: longer-period swell carries more energy and may produce more powerful waves than the height alone suggests.
Swell direction: exposed beaches receive more energy, while bays and headlands may provide shelter.
Wind: light or offshore wind generally creates cleaner waves; strong onshore wind makes the sea more disorganised.
Tide: the tide can change currents, exposed rocks and where the waves break.
Sandbanks: most of these beaches are beach breaks, so the position and quality of the peaks change throughout the year.

Before entering the water:

Watch the ocean for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Look for currents, observe where the waves consistently break and check whether surfers are being carried sideways.

When in doubt, I would always choose the more sheltered option. There will be another opportunity to surf a larger or more exposed beach.

Is the Costa Vicentina suitable for beginners?

Yes, but only with the right beach and the right conditions.

A complete beginner should not select a surf spot using an app alone. A qualified local instructor can choose the safest section of the beach, identify currents and provide appropriate equipment.

Travellers staying further north, around Lisbon, Tróia or Comporta, do not necessarily need to drive directly south for their first lesson.

Although Praia do Pego (Pego Beach) is not part of the Costa Vicentina route covered in this guide, it is an excellent place to surf if you are also visiting the Comporta region, especially for beginners, families and anyone looking for a safe and relaxed introduction to the sport.

Essential surf gear

Even in summer, the Atlantic water can feel cold, particularly during longer sessions.

Before travelling, I recommend checking that you have:

A full wetsuit suitable for the season;
Sunscreen;
Surf wax appropriate for the water temperature;
Water and warm clothes for after the session.

Local surf etiquette and safety

The Costa Vicentina is beautiful, but many of its beaches are remote, exposed and part of a protected landscape.

Choose conditions appropriate for your ability.
Respect wave priority and never drop in on another surfer.
Give beginners and surf-school groups enough space.
Avoid surfing alone on remote beaches.
Use marked access paths and never drive or park on the dunes.
Take all your rubbish with you.
Do not block roads, homes, agricultural entrances or fishing access.

These beaches are not only surf destinations. They are also working environments, natural habitats and part of local communities.

A simple three-day Costa Vicentina surf route

Day 1
São Torpes and Porto Covo
Check the conditions at São Torpes and surf only if they suit your ability. Afterwards, explore Porto Covo or enjoy a slower afternoon on the Alentejo coast.
Day 2
Odeceixe and Arrifana
Observe both beaches before deciding where to surf. Arrifana may provide more shelter, while Odeceixe offers a very different river-mouth environment.
Day 3
Carrapateira and Vila do Bispo
In the Carrapateira area, compare the conditions at Praia do Amado and Praia da Bordeira. If you continue south towards Vila do Bispo, you can also check Cordoama and Castelejo. Choose the beach according to your ability and the conditions on the day rather than trying to visit every spot.

The objective is not to surf every beach. It is to have enough options to make a good decision.
