Surfing in Comporta is all about uncrowded beaches, consistent waves, and a deep connection with nature. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced surfer, this region offers ideal conditions year-round, especially at Praia do Pego, known for its safe beach breaks and relaxed atmosphere.
When people ask me what makes Comporta different, I always say the same thing: space. Space in the water, space on the beach, space in your mind. Unlike more crowded surf destinations in Portugal, Comporta offers something rare: enough space to learn at your own rhythm, enjoy the ocean without pressure, and feel connected to the landscape around you.
The wild, raw and beautifully untouched coastline here is part of the Alentejo region. Long, sandy beaches stretch for kilometres and the waves break gently over sandbanks, making it one of the best places to learn to surf.
Imagine Surf School is based at Praia do Pego (in Comporta), and this is where most of our surf lessons take place. It’s our home spot and, on most days, one of the best beaches in the region for safe, fun and beginner-friendly surf.
That said, surfing always depends on the ocean. Tides, swell size, wind and sandbanks can change the conditions from one day to the next. So, when another nearby beach offers better or safer waves for that specific moment, we may occasionally move the lesson to a different spot along the Comporta coast.
When people ask me where to surf in Comporta, I don’t just list beaches. I think about where I would take you depending on your level, the conditions, and what kind of experience you’re looking for that day.
If you want to see how we sometimes explore different beaches with our students, check our surf trips.
This is where we are based, and where most of our surf lessons take place, because it’s one of the safest and most consistent beaches in the region. Praia do Pego offers:
Comporta Beach is one of our go-to alternatives when conditions change. It’s a classic beach break with both left and right waves, which gives more variety in the water.
When the waves get too big or powerful at Pego Beach, Comporta Beach often becomes the better and safer option.Atlantic Beach is a special spot, and not many people know about it. Located on the Tróia Peninsula and partially sheltered by the Arrábida mountain range, it offers something unique:
Cleaner and more organized waves when the swell is bigger.Aberta Nova Beach is where we go when we want more energy in the water. Located south of Comporta, this beach is more exposed to the Atlantic, which means:
One of the things I love about Comporta is that you can surf almost all year. But the truth is, the kind of surfing you’ll experience changes a lot depending on the season.
Season | Conditions | Best For | Why It Works |
Spring to Autumn (Best for Beginners) | Smaller and more manageable waves, more consistent surf, warmer air and water, safer and more predictable conditions | First-time surfers, beginners, people building confidence, relaxed experiences | This is the most beginner-friendly period. Most surf lessons happen during these months, especially in summer, due to the calm and consistent conditions. |
Winter (Best for Progression)* | Bigger and more powerful swells, more technical conditions, fewer people in the water | Intermediate surfers, progression sessions, confident surfers | Winter brings more energy to the ocean, making it ideal for improving skills. |
*Note: Winter is not only for experienced surfers. We also offer surf lessons for beginners during the winter months, adapting locations and conditions to each student’s level. Winter lessons often include additional learning components beyond time spent in the water, helping students develop a broader understanding of surfing, ocean awareness, and surf culture.
We keep groups small (max 4–5 students per instructor).
That means:
Every student is different. Some are afraid of the ocean, some are too confident.
We adapt everything:
Surfing is not just about technique. It’s about:
That’s what we try to create in every session.
