Comporta is a wonderful place for families, but not because it is filled with organised attractions.

What makes it special is the space: long beaches, animals, rice fields, quiet villages and outdoor activities that children and adults can enjoy together.

After welcoming many families to the region, I have learned that simple plans usually work best. One main activity, a relaxed meal and enough free time at the beach are often more enjoyable than a full schedule.

My main advice:

Plan one organised activity per day. Comporta is spread out, summer parking takes time and children rarely enjoy moving constantly between reservations.

1. Enjoy a slow beach day

A beach day is still one of the best things to do in Comporta with children.

Praia da Comporta is convenient when you also want to visit the village. Praia do Carvalhal has nearby restaurants and services, while Praia do Pego (Pego Beach) combines a wide sandy beach with seasonal facilities and food options.

During July and August, I recommend arriving early. Parking is easier, temperatures are more comfortable and younger children can enjoy the beach before the hottest part of the day.

Ocean safety:

The Atlantic can have currents even when the water looks calm. Stay near supervised areas during the bathing season and follow the lifeguards’ instructions.

I founded a surf school, so I am naturally connected to this activity. However, I only recommend surfing when the child is genuinely curious and comfortable trying something new.

Children from the age of six can join our kids’ surf lessons in Comporta. At Imagine Surf School, each session is adapted to the child’s age, confidence, experience and the sea conditions.

Safety and enjoyment come first. A successful first lesson does not necessarily mean standing up immediately. Becoming comfortable with the board, the waves and the ocean is already valuable progress.

The surfboard, wetsuit, certified instruction and insurance are included. Families only need to bring swimming clothes, a towel, water and sunscreen.

At our school, we have one instructor for every three children under 10, and one instructor for every four to five children aged 10 and over. However, a private surf lesson may be more suitable for a child who feels nervous in the water or needs closer individual support.

3. Meet the alpacas at Mama Adama

For children who love animals, Mama Adama Alpaca Farm is an easy recommendation.

The sanctuary near Grândola cares for rescued alpacas and other animals. Visits give families the opportunity to learn about them and, when appropriate, interact with them in a calm environment.

It is particularly suitable for younger children and for days when the beach is too windy. Contact the farm before travelling, as visits should be arranged in advance.

4. Explore by electric bike

An electric-bike ride is a fun way to discover the landscape beyond the main roads.

Comporta Electric Bikes offers rentals and guided experiences through rice fields, villages, pine forests and sandy paths.

Before booking, confirm that suitable bicycles, helmets and routes are available for every child’s age and height. For families, I would choose a shorter morning route rather than a long ride during the hottest hours.

Short bike ride → Comporta village → early lunch → afternoon at the beach.

5. Go horse riding

Horse riding can be one of the most memorable experiences of a family holiday, especially for older children who are comfortable around animals.

Cavalos na Areia organises guided rides through Comporta’s countryside, forests, dunes and coastal landscape.

Minimum ages and suitable routes vary, so contact the operator before booking. The child’s confidence, the conditions and the welfare of the horses should always determine the experience.

6. Look for dolphins in the Sado Estuary

A boat trip from Tróia is a good option for school-age children and teenagers interested in wildlife.

The Sado Estuary is home to bottlenose dolphins, although sightings are never guaranteed. Even without a close encounter, the trip offers views of the estuary, Arrábida and local birdlife.

Choose an operator that follows responsible wildlife-observation practices. Bring an extra layer, as it can feel cooler on the boat than on the beach.

7. Visit Carrasqueira and the rice fields

The Cais Palafítico da Carrasqueira is a short visit that can become more interesting when children treat it as a discovery walk.

Ask them to notice:

How the wooden walkways were built;
Fishing boats and equipment;
Birds in the mudflats;
The changing water level;
The view across the Sado Estuary.

The pier is connected to a working fishing community. Children should stay close to an adult, keep the paths clear and avoid touching boats or equipment.

Combine the visit with a drive through the rice fields, whose colours and appearance change throughout the year.
